Re: Converting an Emerald Knight to run on 9 volt track

(...) I've seen some power pickups made out of a normal train wheel covered in metal tape. But I would assume there are metal model railroad wheels out there that could be forced on to a technic axle or something similar. A bit more drag, but if it (...) (15 years ago, 3-Dec-09, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Converting an Emerald Knight to run on 9 volt track

(...) I have left it too late. The XL motor isn't shipping until Jan 5th, and the controller not until April. I ordered them anyway, perhaps they'll move it up if they get many orders. (15 years ago, 30-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Converting an Emerald Knight to run on 9 volt track

(...) Crap, Iam an idiot, not paying attention my spelling AND, AND more importantly the correct name of the train! Thanks, I will fix the webpage (of course here(LUGNET) I am doomed to live with the mistake for internet eternity)mistakes ASAP. (...) (15 years ago, 30-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Converting an Emerald Knight to run on 9 volt track

(...) FWIW, on the page it's "Night", and "bogey". I will probably be ordering my EN today, and am too considering options. I have quite a mix of 9V and RC stuff (in fact, about 1/2 the Lego trains back to 1980) Probably I will suck it up and buy (...) (15 years ago, 30-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Converting an Emerald Knight to run on 9 volt track

(...) Ted Mainly due to the fact that the RPM will be different from each motor, meaning that one motor will be working much harder than the other, thus lessening the life of the overworked motor. Also the torque and friction is much higher in the (...) (15 years ago, 30-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Converting an Emerald Knight to run on 9 volt track

(...) Good question, Ted. That is what Ross did with the old 4.5 motor block-- he simply cut the ends off of a 4.5 volt wire and a 9 volt wire, spliced them together, and ran the 4.5 motor off of the power from the 9 volt train motor. JOHN (15 years ago, 30-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains, FTX)

Re: Converting an Emerald Knight to run on 9 volt track

(...) Peter- Very cool. And "they" said it could not be done! Question: What about leaving the 9V motor unit intact and still running a wire from it to the Emerald Night's motor, giving 2 motors in parallel with more pulling power and saving the (...) (15 years ago, 30-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Pulling power of different train systems

(...) Hey, Benn- I'll tell you what I'd like to see-- some third party coming in and dropping in beefier motors in the existing train motor. That would be cool. Come to think of it, didn't somebody actually try that? I've heard from those in the (...) (15 years ago, 30-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains, FTX)

Re: Pulling power of different train systems

(...) ... (...) This is an interesting discussion. Keep in mind that the 9v system was also designed for kids, which is why the motors have so little pulling power. Like you, I've looked at the 8866 and figured it would be of little use to me. But I (...) (15 years ago, 30-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains, FTX)

Converting an Emerald Knight to run on 9 volt track

Well, I have finally made an attempt at converting my Emerald Knight to run on the 9 volt track. Using the Power Functions as show in the instructions and a non functioning train motor unit I was able to make the engine run. I gutted the motor (...) (15 years ago, 30-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains)

  Re: Non-LEGO train question

(...) You should really get yourself an inexspensive (under $10) digital voltmeter. They are easy to use & handy for many things, like checking for dead batteries or open/broken wires. For your problem, first measure the output of the xformer. If (...) (15 years ago, 29-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains)

  Canadian Pacific Holiday Train

Hi, all. A CP holiday train made a stop in my town tonight. Here are some low-res pictures - I thought I would share for the benefit for you train folks, and to see if anyone has ever attempted to render it in LEGO! (URL) better reference photos are (...) (...) Thanks, John! I figured--if nothing else--then the main train-brains here would be able to point me to a good infosource outside of LUGNET. I'll check it ou! Dave! (15 years ago, 28-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains, FTX)

Re: Pulling power of different train systems

(...) Mark, sorriely I have broken down the small rig after the test series, so I have no quick access to a wider testing procedure..... (...) The speed of the Emerald is clearly much lower in comparison to 8866. If you run 8866 at a reduced speed (...) (15 years ago, 28-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains)

  Non-LEGO train question

Recently my father gave me several boxes of O-Gauge track, a transformer, two powered engines, a dummy engine, and about half a dozen cars of various sorts. I hadn't seen the whole arrangement in about 20 years, and I'm not sure when he last had it (...) (15 years ago, 27-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Pulling power of different train systems

(...) Ben, with your rig, how does the 8866 PF Train motor compare with the 10153 motor, for various masses of loco (say no-load, kids' train load and AFOL train load)? I've tested the Emerald Night carriage with an 8866 motor and found that the (...) (15 years ago, 27-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains, FTX)

Re: Pulling power of different train systems

(...) The quality of the rubber is definitely a critical factor for friction, but it is not the only factor. I've found with a normal 10020, one motor, pulling a few Santa Fe coaches, the wheels will spin excessively (especially if you have a slight (...) (15 years ago, 27-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains, FTX)

Re: Pulling power of different train systems

(...) Hi Ted, thanks for your feedback. (...) That would in fact have been favourable. My test rig suffered under the effects of friction in the 3 wheels, which lead the wire. I have tried to minimize this by using high diameters. It would also be (...) (15 years ago, 25-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains, FTX)

  Re: Reducing voltage

  BBB Medium drivers

  Re: Reducing voltage

(...) Hello, you can put AC or DC voltage at the input of the regulator with no problem as long as you don't put more than 9VAC~14VDC. The internal circuit will take both. So a quick fix that put 4.5~5V DC at the input will ouput about 3~3.2VDC at (...) (15 years ago, 23-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.robotics)

  Re: Reducing voltage

  Re: Reducing voltage

  Reducing voltage

Our club lets kids run the controller for one of the lines when we do certain events (like, right now, with Detroit Festival of Trees), but we could use a way to forcibly limit the speed on the line that they're allowed to run.
