You should really get yourself an inexspensive (under $10) digital voltmeter.
They are easy to use & handy for many things, like checking for dead batteries
or open/broken wires.
For your problem, first measure the output of the xformer. If that is good,
hook it up to the track & try again. If that is good, the engine is suspect.
Sometimes the engines will seize up, so first try to move the wheels manualy.
A quick test, if you don't want to go the voltmeter route, would be to hook up
the xformer to the track and VERY briefly short out the track. You should see
sparks.

I hadn't seen the whole arrangement in about 20 years, and I'm not sure when he last had it (...) (15 years ago, 27-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains)
