With the recent discussion on increasing the forum activity, I thought I’d do my part and post this recent MOC here. Those of you on flickr and in the LEGO Train MOCs group may have already seen it.

. .

With the holidays upon us, I decided to revisit the “Hobby Train” set and create a new steam engine for pulling my Holiday Train set around the tree... that “Little Green Engine That Could” that came with that set will now be on switcher/shunter duty :)

This was basically a free build to see what kind of steam locomotive I could create out of the Hobby Train set #10183 (and some BBB wheels). Apart from being a classic steam locomotive, with some modern touches, I did not have a specific engine in mind when modeling. What I came up with was an oil burning steam engine with an Adriatic (2-6-4) wheel configuration... Coincidentally, I read that the Adriatic configuration was first introduced in 1909 on the Austrian State Railway... which makes that flag-matching red/white stripe down the boiler even more appropriate.

Parts not included in the #10183 set were the 9V motor under the tender, the BBB wheels, the technic linkages, the green tree branches, and a few arms of the cow catcher (... oh, and the exhaust cloud was made from Corner Cafe pieces). As is the case for most people, I have also made some modifications since taking the photos. I’ve made notes of those on the main image on flickr.

Thanks for viewing, and thanks again to those who already posted their comments on flickr. Ted

Great build, Ted, and what a perfect loco for bringing out every X-mas to run around the tree! Thanks for “doing your part” and sharing here! :-)

It would be fun for everyone who runs a LEGO train under their tree to share pics of those creations in an “Under the tree train” thread.

JOHN
