I was riding around Suffolk, Virginia over the holidays, and we got behind a garbage truck which had some sort of “robotic arm” coming out of the side of it, “grabbing” the garbage can (read: glorified dumpster) and lifting it up over the side of the truck to dump its contents.

These fully automatic ones are the only game in town here in Southeastern Arizona. There are too many households to go to for people to have to manually load the garbage. Even our recycle trucks are ASLs.

We’ve had them in Brisbane for at least ten years. I seem to remember that some have two arms: one for recycling and one for the other bin.
