This degradation of current Lego sets is called "juniorization". Lego wants
to target kids of younger ages and makes the sets with less pieces and less
complex which makes the sets supposedly easier to put together for younger
kids. It is not just town but also the current castle lineup. The only
themes that don't seem to be affected by this are Star Wars, Technic and Model
Team.
