To Christian and everyone else who is concerned about this issue,

I'm just posting to let you guys know that we *are* looking into this. I
don't have enough information yet to give you any answers, but I or someone
else will post when we do.

Tomas Clark
Producer, LEGO Direct

Hi Bionicle Fans out there,

hopefully someone at LEGO Direct will read this too and can clarify the things.

In Europe the randomly assorted mask bags (#8530) came out in february. I
picked up many of these bags already. To be excactly I do have more than 70
of these bags, which means I spent about US$150 for these masks so far for a
collection of about 150 masks.

However, I am seriously dissapointed now as I had to find out that LEGO has
put in some nastiness here - what rotten luck! Want to know why I am so
dissapointed? Then take a look at the statistics I came up with:

http://www.brickmaster.de/images/bio_masks_list.gif

[Image showing a list of masks I own.]

You will see a list of all possible mask combinations as well as the number
of copies that I own of each combination.

It is more than obvious that these bags are *not at all* randomly assorted!
Out of the 150 masks that I bought, there were no masks at all from the
following colours:
orange, ltgreen, tan, ltblue, grey, dkgrey!
However, I do have more than 50 black masks. That is 30% of the masks being
black although LEGO announces twelve different colours in their catalogues,
magazines and on the bags themselves!

But read on as it's even more barefaced! Obviously, TLC has not even
produced all the different shapes of the masks they announced! There were
only 8 shapes in the bags I picked up out of 12 possible shapes. How can
that be possible? Spending US$150 on these bags (no child will ever pay that
much) and still have no single Huna, Mahiki, Komau or Rau mask? That's more
than weird and definitely a dirty trick in order to make as much money as
possible. No kid will ever be able to get all the masks shown on the bags:

http://www.brickmaster.de/images/bio_masks2_temp.jpg

[Image showing the back of the bags (#8530).]

Yes, take a close look at the bags LEGO is selling and you'll see many
combinations there that will never be sold!

LEGO, I'd really like to get some answers on these - I know someone is
listening (as LEGO seems to be very concerned about their Bionicle theme) so
get anyone at LEGO Direct behind the screen and explain the following:

- How does it come that LEGO only sells 48 different masks rather than 72 as
announced? (even more than 144 combinations are possible anyway)
- Why are more than 30% of all masks black and six other colours missing
completely? (as well as missing shapes)
- Why were the masks Matatu and Ruru produced in other colours than shown on
the bag? (for example no green Ruru should be available according to the bags)
- How can it be that I already have ten copies of one certain mask, but zero
copies of another one? (that's anything  but randomly assorted)
- Will we ever see the 'unknown' type of mask that is shown right in the
middle of all masks ?

I think it's really a disgrace to LEGO to start such a lousy marketing
strategy. Even the kids will soon find out that they were leg-pulled and
LEGO never produced all the masks they show on the bags. Of course - once
the kids find out that they were cheated, then it'll be too late for them as
they've already spent all their money on the Bionicle stuff. However, a very
bad taste of disappointment about the LEGO brand will stay in their minds! I
don't think they'll buy LEGO any time soon again. What a stupid dirty trick
LEGO is playing on them!

Product #8530 totally sucks - play well!

Bye, Christian --- xTIAN.

I too, was going to try to collect all of the masks when they launch in
September. Since you are trying very hard and have not yet suceeded, are you
willing to part with the oodles of copys you have. Since I have none and you
have obviously already started, are you willing to part with the extras that
are now doubt filling up a drawer or shelfspace. I would buy at least 5 of
each copy/color (of the ones you can part with) if such an arangement can be
made. It might offset the cost incured on you on your continuing quest for
the Kanohi Masks of Power, mmuhahaahahaha!!!... Whoops sorry I got a little
carried away.

Excellent!

Thanks a lot for these few lines. Although that won't help me anything right
now, I can at least be sure that someone at LD does care about it and will
hopefully be able to do something regarding the masks. I doubt that I'll buy
any new mask packs until there's a more detailed reply though.

However, I for one still doubt that all the masks have been produced yet.
Maybe everything will clarify in April when the Turaga Sets show up, maybe
not. Accoring to the latest Rumors there will even be "48 US only McDonalds
exclusive masks" in totally new colours. You might want to check the plans
for future masks as well then, looks like the collection will turn out to be
extremely confusing, maybe there'll be more and more masks next year (Slizer
and RoboRider both had at least one set a year after the first releases).

Hoping to hear from LEGO Direct soon!

Hey Michael, calm down a little. Nothing has happened so far!

Unless we will be able to get them from every McDonalds in all European
Countries, not just the US

Probably, TLC will be clever enough to release the masks all over the world.
However, the rumors I heard were about a US McDonalds promotion which does
not mean Europe excluded.

On the other hand, I wouldn't even be surprised if there were US *and* EU
exclusive things such as in 1999 when there were McD promotions in the EU as
well as in the US but along with different sets (8 each).

Accoring to the latest Rumors there will even be "48 US only

Everyone, please read this line carefully again: According to *RUMORS* ! I
never said this will certainly happen and I doubt that anyone at TLC already
knows all the details about tha promotion. Heck, we do not even know if
there will such a promotion.

Rumors are usually based on facts but may turn out to be false. There were
rumors about pirates coming back for years. The fact that this rumor is
based on is that someone working inside TLC has inofficially confirmed that
there will be another McDonalds LEGO promotion in the US for september 2001
and from the discussion I have heard, it will be Bionicle related as well.
Some of the plans did include exclusive masks, but nobody can yet say if
these plans will ever be realised. I just wanted to give Tomas an indication
of how different it will be to get a total overview about all the masks that
are in the works. Even if you work inside LD it might still be difficult to
find out all that.

On the promotional LEGO Bionicle CD-Roms they tell you about golden masks
that will be exclusively at shop.lego.com , at FBTB we have seen new larger
sets containing ltblue and pruple masks and even on the current bags
themselves it shows you a totally new secret shape that has most probably
not even been produced yet. Along with all these exclusive limited editions
it will be hard for LD to answer all these questions at once. That's stuff
about upcoming products and I doubt any person inside TLC really has the
complete overview. However, LD should be able to find out why there are
currently only 48 masks in the bags although 72 were announced in the
catalogs etc.

I doubt that LD will be able to say anything about the rumors by now and
that's not what I was asking for. But in order to find out the current
problems they might want to check that (at least internal) as well before
everything runs totally out of command.

Bye, Christian --- xTIAN.
