Try rotating this part 90°:
http://guide.lugnet.com/partsref/search.cgi?q=32034
at the lower end of the red 1x8.
Add this part:
http://guide.lugnet.com/partsref/search.cgi?q=6536
at the upper end of the red 1x8. Connect this part where there is "blank"
axle between the brown connectors. Run the axle through the axle hole of the
#6536 connector, and point the smooth hole inwards to the tower. You can
then use the smooth hole to connect the red 1x8 plate, or other 1xn plate.
You'll have some difficultly lining everything up, as you noted. But with
some trial-and-error, you can probably come up with a design that works.
Also, try using 3L black friction pegs at the feet instead of 3L axles. This
will give some additional resistance to movement of the tower.
Good luck. It's looking good already!
