Have you taken a look at the 4X4 Off roader 8466? It has very heavy shocks.
They are the same size as the large gray or dark grey shocks just with alot
heaver spring and yellow in color. Lego had the 8466 on sell for $59.99 for
a while (in the US). I just checked the shop@home site and they are sold
out. I have seen them go on ebay for $65-85.00. Not a bad set, five speed
trans, huge tires (same wheels as the 8458 and new 8461), doors like the
8448 and suspension that can be used to make 4 wheel drive with 4 wheel
steering.

Thanks for the response. Actually I have a 4x4 Off-Roader set (or rather,
two, since they sent me an extra by accident :D), and as you said it is
quite a neat model, almost as good as the legendary 8880 Super Car. It comes
with four of those large yellow shocks, but are they a whole lot stronger
than the black or dark gray kinds? I haven't really tested them side-to-side
with one of the other kinds, but at a glance they didn't seem all that much
stronger. (unlike with the small yellow shocks used on the Silver Champion,
where you could instantly tell that they were very tough compared to the
others) Although I might well be wrong here, so I should probably take
another look at them. The good thing about these types is that there are a
lot of extras available on Bricklink, so it should be easy to obtain spares.

Here's a few pictures of mine before I rebuilt it.

Have you tought of using air cylinders for shocks? Look and Alex Zorko's Mad
Max Interceptor MkII  thats a heavy car.

Andrea Grazi used shocks and air cylinders on this 4X4 model.

That sounds like quite an interesting idea. (using pneumatic pistons) My
model will not be nearly that heavy or big but I will definitely give this a
try. (some great models there, btw)
