It's a pity there isn't a remote-control pneumatic switch you could connect
up to Mindstorms or a similar system. I would *love* to be able to remotely
control switches, this would solve your problem somewhat by drastically
cutting (figuratively speaking) the amount of tubing that needs to get from
the switch to the pneumatic cylinder!
It'd mean you could have a ring supply that feeds off the compressor
pistons, backed up with airtanks, and which goes everywhere you'd need it -
a rather neat solution to your problem I imagine.
FWIW, someone did invent an electric-to-pneumatic switch that would enable
someone to control pneumatics with Mindstorms by linking motors to it, but
memory of it is sketchy at best! It would have the same effect as above but
is rather expensive in terms of the number of motors/RCX units, etc. you'd
be likely to need, and IIRC, seemed to be somewhat bulky in appearance,
having a motor included in it. I would imagine you don't have a lot of
trackside space to work with.

| Hi, I have recently developed a pneumatic gizmo to remotely act on my train track points, which is working quite nicely. The thing is, I don't know *how far apart* can I place the compressor so that the loss of charge in the tubes isn't too big. Has (...) (22 years ago, 6-Sep-02, to lugnet.technic)
