The largest earthmoving machines (and possibly the largest moving machines
on land) are the bucket wheel excavators (BWE) used in Germany. The biggest
one is the Orenstein & Koppel 292, which weighs in at 14,877 tons (short
tons- 2000 lb).

Holger Matthes modelled one of these things recently for the ISCC:

If you look at the bottom of his gallery, there are pictures of the real thing.

The Marion 6360, aka "the Captain", was the largest stripping shovel ever
made and weighed 14,000 tons. It had a 180 cu. yd. bucket with an average
270 ton load rating. It was scrapped in 1991.

The largest single-bucket wielding machine was the Bucyrus-Erie 4250-W, aka
"Big Muskie". This machine, a walking dragline, weighed 13,500 tons. It had
a 220 cu. yd. bucket with a load rating of 320 tons. Big Muskie was parked
in 1991 and recently scrapped.

As a matter of interest, the two crawler transporters used by NASA were
built by Marion in 1965. They weigh 3,000 tons unloaded and have a load
capacity of 6,250 tons. This brings the total weight of the beast, when
loaded, to 9,250 tons.

As another matter of interest, Marion was bought by Bucyrus-Erie sometime in
the last few years. At present, B-E doesn't produce any machines nearly as
large as the Big Muskie or The Captain.

(...) In fact, a Bucyrus Erie 5872-WX cross-pit bucket excavator (the largest at the time) worked in the same pit as the "Captain". (...) It's operating weight was around 15,000 tons. Some other factoids: It was the only shovel to have 2 doors on (...) (23 years ago, 24-Mar-02, to lugnet.technic)
