| | | Having built a nice independant suspension 'half chassis' with Znap flexi drive shafts and a diff unit for a mindstorms platform, the thorny issue of steering has become pressing! | | | | | I once made a 4WD chassis based on the classic 24 x 43 technic wheels. I used one of the large turntables. Not for steering, but rather to achieve the ability for the chassis to "twist". | | | | | | I do like that 'swivel hips' idea with the turntable, it would save me alot of unneccesary bother! In the centre, there is an opening in which an universal joint resides, transfering the power from the motor to the front axle. The steering is done by using a (...) | | | | (...) BTW, I think that it is probably fun to build a vehicle with pneumatically operated steering, and it looks cool. | | | | (...) Yeah, the main problem is the switches - if TLC would make a nice sliding pnuematic switch (similar to steam engine valve), pnuematic steering (and lots of other neat stuff) would become much easier. ROSCO (22 years ago, 7-Jan-02, to lugnet.technic)

| | | | (...) Admittedly I'm not too experienced with penumatics. But I think it would be hard to achieve the precision needed for fine control with plastic/rubber switches. And the quality control needed to fine tune every switch so that they behave (...) (22 years ago, 7-Jan-02, to lugnet.technic)

| | | | (...) Using feedback, it should be fairly easy. I once tried this with the current switches, and it sorta worked, but the "dead spot" is way too big, and those switches need so much force to move! It was harder to turn the steering to operate the (...) (22 years ago, 7-Jan-02, to lugnet.technic)
