| | | | (...) Agreed. I remember my 8448 as being very smooth when it was built, and I was able to motorise it using the older 9V ungeared motor no problem. If my memory is correct I geared the motor down by 9:1 before the gearbox, and it would even start (...) (23 years ago, 12-Nov-01, to lugnet.technic)

I ripped the gearbox apart and tried again, and I think I solved it - the motor I had on the mountings behind the engine to drive the gearbox was a bit loose so I'd added some plates to hold in place, and I think one of them was catching on (...)
