model of an MTD Lawn Tractor (the real one also pictured).

The model is built to a scale of 1 stud = 2 inches. There is a 9 v battery
pack under the seat where the real battery would go. It drives a 9v gear
motor continuously. The motor drives the cutting blades and a
continuously variable transmission which has a ratio range from -1 to
+1. The output from the transmission goes through a 9:1 reduction
on the way to the rear wheel's differential. The transmission is
controlled by the red lever sticking out of the right rear wheel arch.
The cutting deck is driven via a pulley connected to a drive from the
gear motor. In true style, I had to arrange for a long drive belt which
winds its way around all the pulleys of the deck. I had to make this
drive belt. It is actually 19 1/2 inches of black elastic obtained from a
fabric store. The ends were cut with a brand new xacto knife blade
and then glued end to end with super glue. It is suprisingly strong.

The bodywork was the real challenge, particularly the engine compartment.
Trying to get that swoopy roundness you can see in the picture of the
real tractor was a lot of fun. And quite frankly, I gave up on trying to
imitate the headlights! But I managed to use a lot of the wild coloured
beams from the various cybermasher sets I've collected one way or
another.

Wow! I too would like to see details of the transmission!
