It would appear that there are some very large mobile cranes which can
have independent control of each section, but it is still done with a
single hydraulic ram and appears to done under computer control. I think
the operator inputs the desired position of each section, then the
computer calculates the series of moves to achieve this. Each section is
elevated and "pinned" to the correct place by the ram, which disengages,
retracts, and then does the next section in the sequence. At least this
is my interpretation from scant evidence; a crane that appears to work in
this fashion can be found in this PDF document. It is a large download
BTW.

It was a bit awkward to get it properly tensioned, aye, but I certainly
didn't spend hours getting it right :-)
