If you don't have any other lego at all I reecomend you buy just one or two
lego (not technic) sets. Most new technic sets come with very few basic plates
and bricks, which are incredibly useful. However, you may find the selection
you have got from your 8448 satifactory.
Also, if you can pick up a space shutle, they come with quite a selection of
basic parts.
