A metaphor that I like to use when describing the voltage / current
relationship is rolling balls down a hill. Voltage describes how tall the
hill is, and the current is how steep the hill is. The energy that the • ball
has is dependent on both the height of the hill, and the grade of the • hill.
It also makes it easy to describe why low voltage / high current can kill
(ie jumping down a 5m cliff), but high voltage / low current wont (200m • tall
hill, but gently sloping, so you can stroll down it.) This metaphor
generally makes it easy for people to understand the idea.

Case in point: a Van de Graaf generator (those cool static electricity
machines) puts around a million volts through your body, but current is so
minimal all you get is the cool spikey hair effect.  Whereas your house's
120 volts can kill you.
