Fun Fizzics Fact of the Day:  using the customary metaphor for the flow of
electricity,  "current" is the measure for *how many* electrons are • flowing
past a given point per second,  and "voltage" measures *how much* energy • each
one has (I hear that the physicists are saying this model is not exactly • true.
But,  like Newtonian mechanics,  it works fine for those of us who aren't • into
splitting atoms or trying to find quarks  ;-)

A metaphor that I like to use when describing the voltage / current
relationship is rolling balls down a hill. Voltage describes how tall the
hill is, and the current is how steep the hill is. The energy that the ball
has is dependent on both the height of the hill, and the grade of the hill.
It also makes it easy to describe why low voltage / high current can kill
(ie jumping down a 5m cliff), but high voltage / low current wont (200m tall
hill, but gently sloping, so you can stroll down it.) This metaphor
generally makes it easy for people to understand the idea.

David Drew

(...) ball (...) hill. (...) tall (...) Case in point: a Van de Graaf generator (those cool static electricity machines) puts around a million volts through your body, but current is so minimal all you get is the cool spikey hair effect. Whereas (...) (24 years ago, 6-Oct-00, to lugnet.technic)

(...) You can use any brush-type DC motor as a generator. (...) Well, *almost* exactly: there's got to be at least some loss in the system. But the fact that you can't spot the error speaks well of Technic motors. (...) It takes very strong magnets, (...) (24 years ago, 5-Oct-00, to lugnet.technic)
