Although not as complex and original as a gun that fires solid lego pieces, a
simple automation band shooter can be made by driving a 24 tooth gear with a
worm drive attached to a motor. Hook elastic bands over the gear and onto a
protuting axle about 15 cm away from the 24 tooth gear. Turn the motor and • the
bands will ping off one by one.

Mike,

Just recently the topic of rubber band gun out of LEGO came up here at the
office and I was thinking of making one this weekend. Your idea sounds good
and simple, but I'm having trouble picturing the design. Could you supply a
pic or diagram? Or maybe just some more verbal detail, it's probally much
simplier that I'm making it out to be or maybe I'm just dense today.

Not to jump in for Mike, but I think this is kinda what he's talking about:
(bear with my wonderful ascii)

              rubber                  '24' cog gear
  |*********   band          __/\/\/\__    (I tried)
  |         *********       _\        /_
  |                  *******\*          /
  |                        <  ********* >
  |                         /_        _\*
  |                          /_      _\
  |                            \/\/\/
  |
Axle

As the gear is turned counterclockwise (in my example), the rubber band gets
closer and closer to the edge, and when it gets there, pings off... when done
with multiple rubber bands (each a notch/tooth/cog apart), it works as a good
semi-automatic gun... But you need to gear the 24-cog gear down with a worm
gear so that the multiple rubber bands dont make it spin as soon as it's
loaded... Probably able to fit even more with a 40-cog gear, too (or largest
you have)
