I also have an 855 Crane set, as well the 853 Car Chassis - in both sets I
experienced problems with the 1x16 bricks breaking in two (I would crazy glue
them together, but it's just not the same - sometimes they would break
again). Also, some of the axle pieces would twist or bend relatively easily.
Luckily I was able to replace these pieces.
I think Lego was made aware of this and actually started using 'softer'
plastic which is more flexible and less prone to breakage. Either that, or is
it possible the plastic becomes more brittle over time (?). Keep in mind,
this was 20 years ago. I have not experienced breakage in any of my newer
sets.
