A few notes and some opinions on the sets mentioned...
Even though it's not a Technic set, the 6979 would probably be a
good cheap choice for a fiber optic unit to experiment with, as it
comes with a battery box, micro motor and needed wiring. They are at
$40.00 at my local K-mart on clearance. You will have a lot of wasted
parts, however, unless you have other use for those huge UFO saucer
pieces. (Although you may be able to trade them)
An 8480 would be the best source for a serious technic-head,
as you can use the numerous leftover parts for other creations. You
would get 2 motors in that one plus the large 9v battery box, and 2
really LONG wires! It will cost you more though. The 8456 has the
FO unit and battery box but no motor. The Mindstorms extreme
creatures set just has the FO unit, no motor or battery box.
