Set number 6979 UFO Interstellar Starfighter also inlcludes fiber-optics.

Even though it's not a Technic set, the 6979 would probably be a good cheap choice for a fiber optic unit to experiment with, as it comes with a battery box, micro motor and needed wiring. (...)
