Yeah, I think they should be called planetary gears too, but I am just
about as sure as you are...  The gears are supposed to move in a certain
fashion, but their fit is so loose that it is easy for the teeth of the
gears to step on top of each other if they have any force opposing the
rotation, such as from stalling the motor.  The teeth are also so small
that making them out of plastic isn't a good idea IMO, as I can see the
teeth stripping off easily.  Overall, to pack that much torque in such a
small housing is a work of art.
I agree that the addition of planetary gears to the LEGO regimen would
be cool. I would also like to see a compact design for a quaiffe limited
slip differential and a good design for an automobile clutch...
Building these into my new car project (honda nsx) has proved challenging...

(...) Nope, I'm wrong. Turns out a planetary gear arrangement is a sort of coaxial non-reversing gear reduction thingy good for high torque applications and resistant to skipping... um, well there's a diagram of one at (URL) near the bottom of the (...) (24 years ago, 18-Apr-00, to lugnet.technic)
