Please, let me introduce myself and invite you to my gallery at the recently opened Polish Lego forum. After years of lurking I have finally decided to post on Lugnet - and here I am, a humble AFOL. Really nice to meet you, folks. Technic is my favourite Lego topic and that’s why the first MOC I present is Technic - it’s a fully motorized pneumatic backhoe loader. As most of you probably don’t read Polish very well, I’ll try to describe the model briefly here and now. In February 2003 the first pictures of 8455 backhoe loader were published (from Toy Fare, I guess). And that’s when I decided to create my own backhoe: earlier (8455 was scheduled for August; I finished work in July) and better (with three electric motors), using both stud and studless parts. I also wanted to make the boom fold asymetrically, like in 3CX by JCB, which required two motors (you can see what I mean on picture 1). Unfolded boom would be set aside (to the right; see picture 2), while driver’s seat - to the left, which, in my opinion, gave the driver a better view when digging. One of the two 9V geared motors (as seen on picture 3) was responsible for driving rear wheels OR opening the boom to working position. The other one was used for steering the front wheels OR lowering/raising the outriggers. Red 9V micomotor’s sole purpose was to turn the whole boom sideways (over 90 degrees both ways). A handle in driver’s cabin was used for switching between larger motors’ functions. Valves of arm’s pneumatic pistons were located behind the cabin (almost like in 8455); valves for front shovel were external, as were all three battery boxes. This made sense, I think, since front shovel was used only in „driving mode”, while the arm - in „digging mode” only. Pictures 4 and 5 show arm’s and shovel’s range of movement. The last two are just general views. What else? Steering wheel actually turned when the front wheels were turning. Doors could be open manually. Top „lights” were manually adjustable. And for those of you, who want to see my favourite trick, there is an mpg (3 Mb, only 12 seconds long) hidden in Polish text, under word „film”. Watch the driver!

Using past tense in the above text is not accidental - last year the model was cannibalized for parts. But this means that new ones are on their way… :) Please, feel free to post comments on my MOC. Constructive criticism welcome :)

(...) Hi dmac! Great backhoe! I love how you've used the motors and gear selectors to get multiple functions, like in the 8480 space shuttle. And it looks good too, well done! ROSCO (20 years ago, 20-Jun-04, to lugnet.technic, FTX)
