I have problems with two seized electric motors 71427 which come with 8479 sets.
It is impossible to rotate shafts with bare fingers. Could anybody give me
detailed guidelines how to safely disassemble them to clean or to repair them?
Please, help me!

Hello, this happens from time to time. Contact Lego Consumer Affairs and they
should be happy to replace them for you.

I was checking through my motors and found three that were seized. Either from
not being used, or for some reason or another. I called up Lego and they sent me
new ones.

As for taking them apart. I dunno. There are people that have internal pictures
of the Motors somewhere I'm sure.

Good luck.

I've tried.
a) it's hard to disassemble - you'll ruin it. You have to use drill just
to take the motor out. You must carefully open it.
b) in my case the permanent magnets inside turned to magnetic dust -
there was nothing to clean/repair, it was ruined (without reason)

I asked Czech LEGO for replacement, got it after few weeks.

I have had six 71427 motors replaced, out of about 20.  If you really want to
open them, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to lever out the backplate at the
bottom.  It will be obvious that you've done this though, so it may invalidate
the warranty.

I will no longer buy any sets with these motors, even 1351 movie backdrop at
less than half price!  I've had bad motors from this, two 8479s, a Cybermaster
and 8735 motor pack.  I have two more 8479s and two more 1351s, so I'm waiting
for more problems :-(

Rather than opening the motors, you're better to just ring up Lego Shop at Home,
choose one of the 'problem with product' options and explain that the motors
have seized.  I think they've replaced so many now that they'll recognise your
problem.  You'll then have to post them to the consumer service address and wait
a few weeks for replacements.

My latest replacements were 43362 motors, which are functionally almost identical but don't have the problem.   See the comparison here:
http://www.philohome.com/motors/motorcomp.htm

I wonder how much this contributed to TLC's losses - thousands of motor
replacements at £15 a time?  I wouldn't like to be manager of the motor company!

Over what time period? What are you doing with them? I've got 16 (probably
half used, off of eBay) in use for a couple years with one problem of this
nature popping up (a recently purchased, *used* motor from eBay). Does anyone
have any firm statistics or other anecdotes?

What is the problem (it's been identified, or you have reason to suspect it's
in the 71427 but not the 43362)? How many 43362's do you have? I've only got two
of this motor, and so reserve it for special applications (the lower weight and
even increased internal friction are very helpful in some high-speed,
high-precision application).

I have caled LEGO Netherlands and I would get a new motor if I was able to
prove I had bought it within less then two years.
