I had many problems getting mine to work, I was changing the rubber bands
and such, when my girlfriend said, let me see it. She roll it and it
unfolded magically, I asked her how she did it. She told me you have to roll
it gently like you would for a puppy or a baby. So I did that and it worked.
Basically you have to have your hand on the floor, you can't drop it or the
head fly's off. Then from the front of the droid there is a little ledge you
can put your middle finger on for leverage. then you just roll it flicking
your wrist to make it sure it rolls. I can do it 2 out of 3 times now, with
no modifications. She can do it every time. Just thought I would let you
know it works without modification. Just curious, did your model come with
the additional sheet of instructions that are a little different on some of
the rubber band positions?

To get mine to work I had to commit the ultimate sacriledge and modify a
lego part.
I filed the "edge" off the black "catch with cross hole"
http://w3.one.net/~hughesj/technica/registry/connect/conn_7.html
that latches the back legs. this let is slip off and unfold easier. It was
the easiest thing to do without dismantling the whole model.
After a few judicious touches it unfolded much more often.
