Actually, they are telling the truth. As sad as that is...
I worked at TRU for a couple of Christmas' back in 1990 and 1991. All of the
inventory routing and control is done at the distribution center. The folks at
the stores are basically blind. The stores do not know what is on a truck until
it is unloaded. The stores cannot see what is at the distribution center (I
think they can see what is at other stores, however. Go figure...). The stores
cannot request specific merchanidise if they are low on a particular item. The
entire time I worked there, I never heard a good reason for any of this (A
couple of BS ones, but whatever.). The forecasting of need and the routing of
inventory is all controlled by the
"all-knowing-gods-of-the-distribution-center", apparently because it is all too
complicated for mere mortals to understand. Also, I think a lot of it is
automagically driven by software, with some human oversight.
Anyway, for whatever reason, that is the way of TRU. Also of note, the trucks
are locked and un-locked by the store managers. Also, they use big rubber
zip-tie like devices to insure that the truck has not been opened during
transit. In order to open the truck, the "zip-tie" must be cut, and cannot be
put back together without obvious signs of tampering. Only the store managers
have the "zip-ties", and they coded with serial numbers. It's actually a neat
system.
