I will tell you what the book said. The book noted that those barriers are a
security device designed to slow down and halt intruders getting close to the
basement area of the palace. Apparently they tripped the security system
while on route on the bridge. Lucas reported that originally he wanted to
have doors close in on them, however with doors, they would not be able to see
each other. You will note that both Obi-Wan and Maul start pacing back and
forth with anticipation while Qui-Gon begins to relax and meditate. Lucas
wanted each character to be able to see each others responses to the pressure
and their surroundings.

Don't get me wrong he is annoying but because I knew what (...) (26 years ago, 24-May-99, to lugnet.starwars)
