Last night I made actual retracting landing gear for my X-Wing as well as adding
sides to the R2D2 socket so he won't fall out.
I won't go into to much detail trying to describe my modifications for the
retracting gear since it would be too complex to do in text. When I get a
chance I'll do it in LDRAW. The front was quite tricky trying to get a gear
that when retracted would fold into just the thickness of a single plate. I
wasn't totally successful, but I didn't go too much over by using two of this
part to attach to the nose and put the ski on.

For the rear gear I had more room inside the empty spots of the bottom wing
engines. Unfortunately I'm less happy with my results there, so I'm going to
try to work at it a little more, maybe using some kind of clip, like
http://home.att.net/~partsref/images/4735.gif instead of hinge construction like
I first came up with.
I found a couple of good uses for the large storage area in the back of the
X-Wing. I can stash the extra parts left over from the various Star Wars sets
and use them for the survival gear Luke pulled out in Empire Strikes Back. Or,
if you want to say Luke is part of the Jedi Mob, you can also fit a disassembled
minifig, and say Luke chopped him up with with his lightsaber and stashed the
body in the trunk... :-)

| I just came up with an idea after getting the X-wing to make the rear landing gear more realistic. What you need for each side is a minifig ski, a 1x1 round plate, and two 1x1 round bricks. Where there is the space for a 2x3 brick on the botom of (...) (26 years ago, 5-May-99, to lugnet.starwars)
