Hmm. I see what you mean. The color difference isn't noticeable (to me) on the
set-box picture. So I suspect it's a matter of rebelscum getting a prototype to
photograph (or just getting pictures of a prototype).
Or maybe LEGO's making a new shade of gray, in-between the other two.
Can you tell I'm just guessing?
