Question about building an AT-AT —Mychal Zimny
I'm just looking for some input from people who have built one. How does one hinge the leg and hip joints? I suppose there's always click hinges but I was looking for another way. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (23 years ago, 21-Apr-02, to lugnet.starwars)

(...) If you just want posability I'd go for wormgears, they offer good strenght if built solid. Have a peek in Christopher Snead's (Mech builder) Brickshelf account: (URL) (23 years ago, 21-Apr-02, to lugnet.starwars)

Re: Question about building an AT-AT —Shaun Sullivan
(...) Hi Mychal, I ended up using friction pegs for the major joints, and relying on the weight of the AT-AT to hold the joints in position. In all, there are four major "joints" in the leg - the "hip" joint, which actually is located behind the (...) (23 years ago, 22-Apr-02, to lugnet.starwars)

(...) (URL) of the problem is that in the "real" thing all the weight is apparently supported on joint alpha (see diagram). And unfortunately, that creates a whole heck of a lot of leverage on that joint. Enough to snap and/or severely bend a lego (...) (23 years ago, 22-Apr-02, to lugnet.starwars)

Re: Question about building an AT-AT —Tobbe Arnesson
<<snip>> (...) One thought I've had is to have a Technic 9V motor with a cross axle connector to spin the wormgears. Just attach the motor, power it up 'til the joint is in place, detach the motor and work on the next joint... /Tobbe (URL) (23 years ago, 22-Apr-02, to lugnet.starwars)

Well, the problem being mostly that at present I can just move the legs nearly instantly to where I want, using only one hand (the other hand is needed [and whatever else I can use]) to balance (...)
