Well, after my frequent trips to the colonies, the colonial government decided
to hire me on for a deep space exploration journey. I snagged some pictures of
the ship we'll be on. It's a New Plymouth _Explorer_ class (I really hope they
change that unimaginative name, or they'll never sell 'em to anyone but the
government), and here's what she looks like:

She's a deep space explorer ship, and they use the same design for two
roles. Our role is a five-man crew to go catalog uncharted planets. In the
other role, she carries a larger crew to do more detailed surveys on
the planets we find interesting. It's not as sleek as some of the ships
we see at home, but trust me, her seemingly random design certainly
belies her apparent lack of purpose. Uh, or something like that.

Here's a shot of the bridge of the ship. You can see four of the five of
us in this shot; the guy in the cowboy hat is our Captain, and we for
obvious reasons call him Tex. You can barely see our engineer/navigator,
he's the one with the hardhat. I'm the one at the helm console, and the
young lady behind me is the security officer and geological specialist:

Here are a couple shots of our living area, though I have to apologize for
the clarity:

In these you can see that we've got some fairly spacious arrangements--
though, yes, that is the main engineering console smack dab in the
middle of our "bedroom". On the starboard side of the ship, Tex has his
stateroom. He should really clean up better, but none of us will complain
about his helmet on the floor. On the port side are our five bunks. In the
other configuration, those four are "hot bunks", shared by eight crewmembers,
but for our longer mission, we're afforded more space.

I'm a pretty good cook, but don't tell anyone, or I'll wind up spending a lot
of time here:

The ship is built mostly around a central corridor leading from the aft
hold to the bridge.

It's a little bigger than what I'm used to flying (I race small ships on
the weekends), but it should be an interesting trip. When I get back, I'll
show you what I found...
