Can't dropships and transports be escorted by fighters or something?

OK, maybe I'm  throwing too much quasi-realism at it, but I think this sort
of discussion is fun.

Yeah, I guess it can be, but when critique of someone's modelling is
involved, I see it as a double-edged sword, potentially working to
complexify, clumsify or blandify (sometimes even uglify!) someone's creation
through awkward modifications in the name of "realism", when more often than
not it's simply according to some limited/borrowed definition of "the way
things will work in the future".
For example, my Shockwave bomber's canopies are opaque!
http://www.geocities.com/doctorshnub/blue4.jpg ) How can the pilots see
out??? I didn't care - I liked its "blast shields down!" look far more than
simple transparent canopies, and I knew that a pseudo-scientific explanation
could easily be cooked up.

Transports should have a fighter escort, yes, but they have a different • role
than a dropship, and IMO, a dropship is better off if it can defend itself.

[...]

Consider the role of fighters:

Hmm... it sounds like the real issue here is names defining roles, e.g. "a
dropship does _this_, a transport does _this_, a fighter does _this_...".
Frankly, if people of this generation can be uncertain about the strategic
roles of, say, a "dropship", then in the future it could easily come to pass
that craft that are called "dropships" perform roles that "transports"
perform today. Where is it written that what a name means, cannot change?

Of course, this is yet another incarnation of the argument I always get into
in this NG... just consider me the "flexible pseudoscience" evangelist ;-)

Cheers,
