The Glimmerwing is a fast transport cargo ship with a 1 man crew. Designed for hauling moderate amounts of freight quickly, it has oversized engines and roughly 60% of the ship (by fuselage volume, not including engines) is cargo space. Accomodations for the pilot include a Nutri-Mat, bed, & potty for those multi-day runs (yeah, no shower. Hey, it’s a one man ship, get used to it).

Builder’s notes: Originally, this ship was intended to compete in Mark Sandlin’s civilian MOC contest. I’m a little slow at building, so here it is something like 6 months late. Some of you have seen part of this as I displayed it partially complete at NWBC last weekend. At any rate, the ship is approximately 60 studs long by 46 studs wide by about 17 bricks tall (with the landing gear extended). This is my first ship with pneumatic landing gear. It’s fully retractable and when extended, the gear holds not only the ship, but a full load of cargo (literally!). It’s nearing load capacity for the 3 cylinders that are there, though. I didn’t anticipate the front getting so heavy... or really, the whole ship either -- it’s quite portly in real weight. I think I should have actuated the front gear with two cylinders, not one. Retrofitting that would suck though... there’s not enough room without widening the ship at that point by 2 to 4 studs. Also, an unfortunate side effect of this being my first pneumatically geared ship is that I didn’t know the cylinders leak air. Essentially, you can extend the gear and it’ll sit there just fine for a couple of hours, but eventually will sink back down to the ground. The next round of gear must have a way to sit on it’s on weight without relying on the cylinders for extention -- that’ll take some thought, I guess. The rear cargo deck is actuated by the wheel on the top of the ship amongst all the greeble stuff. I used some of my wife’s heavier sewing thread for “cable”. The engine’s are attached using tecnic axles. All atempts at using studs were too weak to past the “swooshing” test. (Which it did fail several times... those engines shatter quite nicely when they fall off.) At the end of the construction though, it will pass “swoosh” and I feel one of my more aesthetically pleasing ships to date. Comments and criticism are appreciated.

(...) I gotta tell you Brian, that is one pretty hauler. Without a doubt, I can say those are the best looking engines I have ever seen on a ship. I haven't been around as much as most people, but my original thought was "what did he just glue to a (...) (20 years ago, 6-Nov-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

(...) snippity dippity This ship rocks. I think I saw some poor shots of it among the NWBRickcon photos, and was like "What's that big chunky white ship? Looks interesting." And interesting it is. I love this thing, it has just the right amount of (...) (20 years ago, 6-Nov-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

(...) (snip) I like everything about this ship except for how blunt the front end looks. I think if you replaced the front canopy with a Jango's Slave I canopy it would make the front look less blocky. -Grand Admiral .space Curator (URL) (20 years ago, 8-Nov-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

(...) That's a really great job! I love that cargo bay, especially the curved internal window and doors, and litte ladders and red pipes for detail. Well done! Cheers, (URL) Sci-Fi LEGO> (20 years ago, 11-Nov-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

(...) This was really a fun ship to look at! I loved the cargo bay, with the curved observation window. I can picture the terrified lone minifig pilot watching through that window at some hideous xenomorph busting its way out of a packing crate (...) (20 years ago, 11-Nov-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

First off, great engines. The texture created by that ridged white chunky piece works really well to offset the general smoothness of the engines. The greebling under that panel is also cool. That said, I think the general front area of the ship (...) (20 years ago, 12-Nov-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)
