I would say that you are right about the history. My guess is that the
designs were simply meant to keep the line fresh, giving the collectors
something new to amass and giving the newbies something different than the
previous year or so. I doubt that TLC had any idea that wed all gather
online and compare notes this far in the future.
I dimly recall someone getting their knickers in a twist about the LEGO space
chronology a while back. Ah, the absolutism of youth! I remember it well. Let
us be thankful that this is a forum that offers sage advice like this:

Having said what Ive said, the Classic Space -> Futuron -> Space Police(BT1)
did follow some sort of a logical projection. Past then, it gets a little a
chaotic.
