I usually start with a base of 6 x 8, or 6 x 10 plates set upon 2 x 2 x 45
degree slopes. I stiffen that up with 1 x 16 beams and then enclose that • with
more plates. That takes care of the bottom of the ship.

The top is a little harder. I usually just run some 1 x n plates across • the
corridore pieces to hold them together and have a flip top roof for
access.

I start with that size base for bigger ships, but I strengthen it with
plates.  That does sound like a really good idea though.  Something worth a
try...

I think my 1x16 technic beams are all being used though....in stuff I can't
really take apart....(my transport, and MIBO).
