To Paul and to anyone interested in answering:
What would be your approach for putting into action a plan to see better
sharing of information and resources amongst fan sites?
This kind of thing is beyond the scope of my knowledge and experience to
implement. But, as someone who cares about the future of the LEGO community,
Id like to see this come to pass. Id love to hear others ideas on this
subject as well :-)

Tim,
Can you give an example of the type of information and resouces youre
talking about? Im a bit confused on what issues between sites and groups
youre refering to.
|
Hi James -
Many of the issues you ask about run beneath the surface. For a couple reasons,
Im not going to cite specific examples of them. I doubt my knowledge is
entirely objective. Also, Id *much* rather focus on the positive and where we
can go than point fingers.
|
Ive actually seen a great deal of sharing between the major reference sites
here, for example LUGNET, Peeron and say Bricklink all link together
amazingly well.
So I guess Im missing where the problem is occurring, maybe Im just not
tuned into it.

You need to shift your frame of mind to really see what Im talking about. It
should be approached from the perspective of a newbie. Sure, *we* all know what
resources are where, and we can even follow links between the sites. But,
someone new to the hobby comes on the scene and all they will see is a bunch of
sites that partially overlap each other in data they offer, and no clear
singular starting point.
I hear it often from the outside when people learn about our community.
Theyre confused about whats where, who does what, and why its not more
integrated. Theyre confused about posting to LUGNET - does it cost money? (one
example among many) Nothings been done to address that confusion.
Where does a newbie go to get an orientation on the LEGO community as a whole?
Also, where does a seasoned veteran go for a one-stop LEGO experience, with
direct access to information they need everywhere? I know this isnt trivial
stuff, but I think its a goal that can and should be worked towards.
Hope this clears things up, and also hope it raises more questions :-)
