Dear AFOL's,
I have several vintage space helmets (they have straight sides, not curved
like modern helmets). Does anyone know when these were used? (~1977-~1983?)

Also some seem to have the dimples for a visor, but none of my modern visors
work. Does anyone know what a vintage visor looks like, or what the dimples
were used for?

Posted or emailed responses appreciated.
Thanks,
CS

They were standard until 1987 (classic space, castle and town) in a variety of
colors.  The dimples were for the castle knights old helm visors (very pricey
nowadays).  To my knowledge the dimples were not used for any other purpose.
The old helmet in terms of space must have employed a force field (Trekkie
kind of thing) to protect the wearer from space exposure.  Modern helmets
began around 1987-88 and incorporated a physical visor.  It was more of a
psychological comfort to the wearers of these space helmets to know an actual
object was keeping the smile from being sucked of their smiling yellow faces.

Use the Lugnet Set Guide to look up the history.  Type "space" in the search
field, research "classic".  Then go to "castle" and look in the early 1980s
sets.
