I have come up with a vertical corridor design:

The main problem is that the connections wouldn't be as good as the
horizontal corridors due to the lack of vertically-connecting methods that
use Technic pins. For support, it should be fine as long as the corridors
make a sort of column that runs top to bottom all the way to the baseplate.
Adittional supports from module-to-module will still be needed, but the
corridors need to be running through the module's center of gravity. I'm
not sure I'm making much sense here, but at least I'm trying. :\
