Due to the size of the weapons I'm employing on my rather huge (six-foot)
capital ship, I find myself needing a turntable of much greater capacity
than the ones produced by Lego. The weapons I am using are more than twenty
studs long, six bricks high, and four studs wide. Each of these weapons
probably weigh more than seven ounces. Tonight I will experiment with gears
and such, but I was wondering if any of you could help with this problem.
Since the weapons will be emplaced in turrets of two, the turntable must be
able to support, say, nearly a pound of weight..

Is the Technic turntable sufficient?

They might be. Sometimes they tend to separate between the base and top,
especially if weight hang from the or are installed sidewise. If the turrets
are on top of things and the weight is at least somewhat balanced they should
be fine.

For extra super-duty turntables (as they are used in big cranes in .technic)
you can put a circle of rollers around the turntable to hold the weight and
just use the turntable element to turn the structure. This is probably overkill
in this application though.

See TJ's crane, under Thrust Roller Bearing:

There's plenty of examples of this. Ask in .technic if you need more info.

If you get problems with separation you might be able to find those threaded
technic axles and a couple of technic nuts to help secure things.

You used to be able to get those in the Space Shuttle, Airtech Claw Rig,
etc.... today they sell them through Pitsco. Not sure what current Technic
sets have them. VERY nice part.

I love 'em!

Hi, I struggled with much the same issue on my capital ship. I wanted to replicate the Millenium Falcon concept of two accessible turrets. But by the time I was done the proportions seemed way off to me. The turrets were one fifth the length of the (...) (21 years ago, 16-May-03, to lugnet.space)
