The term was first used by the designers of Star Wars on the blueprints to
describe the areas on ships or sets where lots of little bits would be
applied to represent exposed technological "stuff" because they didn't want
(or need) to draw it out in blueprint form.
After the blueprints were made available to the public for purchase in the
early/mid 80s, the term caught on.
