Is this what you are referring to (program -> USB Tower -> spybot)?  It
seemed to work just fine for me.

I'm nearly certain that you can't (currently) download programs to a Spybot via
the USB tower.  The MindScript compiler (LCC32) complains that it can't open the
serial port (and unless LEGO releases an update to their vpbrick.dll COM object
it is unlikely that you will ever be able to download a MindScript program using
the USB tower).  The NQC compiler (2.5r2) complains saying that the USB tower
isn't supported for the Spybotic target.  Unfortunately, BricxCC doesn't display
any error message in this situation.

So, while a lot of stuff in BricxCC does work just fine with the USB tower and a
Spybot, the program download stuff doesn't.

Of course you are correct!  I repeated the process (unplugging the cable
to simulate the failure of the comm port) and found that it detected the
spybot through the USB Tower; then when I attempted to download the
program, it activated the USB Tower and transmitted something (a couple
bytes, most likely)... but definitely not a program.  I am guessing that
BricxCC transmitted the "stop program" command prior to calling NQC for
the program download.  However, I received no error message or
indication that it failed, other than Not hearing the confirmation beeps
from the spybot.

Serial/USB tower support for spybot program download would be a great
feature for a future release!
