Rob,

Yes, the MicroScout needs the light tube.  The Scout, on the other hand,
should work with the IR tower.  As I stated in my previous message, I have
absolutly no problems downloading NQC code to my Scout using BricxCC and the
IR tower.  I think the problem could be that the Scout SDK will only work
with the serial version of the tower.

Since LEGO no longer supports the Scout, I don't think there is anyway to
get the SDK to work with a USB tower.

Is there anyone that can disprove this?

Thanks,

Martin

I think you need to use the USB tower and the light tube.  The Scout uses
VLL IIRC.

I may be thinking of the MicroScout...

Here's what I found out about the Scout and the USB tower:

If you are Programming the Scout in NQC or using the Brixc Command Center, the
USB tower and the Scout will communicate just fine.

HOWEVER, if you are trying the use the Scout Software Development Kit (SDK) from
LEGO, you need a serial tower. The reason for this is that LEGO released the
Scout SDK before the USB tower and never updated the software to be compatible
with it.

I was able to answer my own question.

Also thanks to all who replied.

Martin, Rob,

I found the same thing with Martin did.
I bought RDS and an USB IR Tower. They work well but I have to set the USB IR
Tower range to short (through the control panel of my WINDOWS 98) for
downloading NQC programs. Otherwise, communication errors sometime occur. I do
not know whether this is specific to my USB IR Tower or other members also
experience the same situation. One good thing is that if you just want to send
control (not downloading your NQC program) even under short range setting the
tower can send command to the SCOUT which is several meters away.

Thanks,

Liem PH.
