I am currently working on a program that will monitor where a RCX goes.  I
am trying to establish a coordinate system so if it finds a light it can
tell the location of the light.  I was thinking about monitoring motor
revolutions, but then I am worried about how to handle bouncing off of a
wall.  Does anyone have any ideas?

As stated by Lester and Bernd, navigation in a 'real' world environment
is somewhat complicate. Due to limitations in accuracy, it is nearly
impossible to perform the 3 basic tasks mentioned by Bernd.

1. Make the robot drive a s-t-r-a-i-g-h-t line of about 2 meters.
2. Let it drive back exactly to the starting point.
3. Teach the robot to make a 360° turn. Then let it do a 90° turn 8 times in

First i thought, that it might be possible to come up with a mechanical
design, with maximizes the accuracy of the vehicle itself. But i have to
realize, that dead reckoning is not a solution to the positioning
problem. It can only help the robot to approximate a position. Without
an reference system, it is impossible to navigate.
The robot has to calibrate its 'internal' position (from dead reckoning)
with some kind of sensor to find its 'real' position in the outside
environment.

For us as a biological system, this calibration is mainly done via
vision. Even with continuous calibration, we are not able to move 10
meters on a imaginary straight line. There are animals, which are able
to do so i.e. the fox.

It is very easy to verify this. Close your eyes and walk 10 meters while
you are monitored by a video to record the track you have moved.

You need a external reference to navigate through the environment.
Different types of external references where discussed in the newsgroups
here on lugnet before.
