It is working!

In case anyone else encounters this issue... here is the solution.

Per Geoff Gerrietts:
Also, unless you've tweaked your kernel to allow it, I'm pretty sure
you're going to need to disable the serial mouse driver. That's
(usually) handled by a program called gpm; it gets started in your
/etc/rc.d scripts during system startup. If you tune using the GUI,
you should be able to change that from linuxconf or whatever sibling
thereof you're currently running; if you're not using the GUI, then
you can just go into /etc/rc.d/rc3.d and find the S??gpm file and
remove it.

I just moved the file to /unused (in case I wanted it back) and reboot'd.
IR communication is working perfect.

Thank You Geoff!

(next to tackle the "No rule to make target 'legOS.dis2', needed by
'all' --- I prolly didn't set the Makefile options correctly)

(...) That file should just be a soft link to /etc/rc/init.d/gpm (or ../init.d/gpm), so there's no need to keep it. ROSCO (23 years ago, 19-Feb-02, to lugnet.robotics.rcx.legos)

(...) The proper way to manage the /etc/rc.d scripts with RedHat at least is chkconfig. So the proper command (as root) after moving the link back from /unused would be: chkconfig --level 0123456 gpm off More info is at the man page for chkconfig. (...)
