I have noticed low cost PICs (such as OOPic) that are capable of controlling
(and getting useful data out of) devices like the Polaroid sonar rangefinder
and other devices. Is there a benefit in delegating processing tasks such as
this to a secondary micro controller? I am relatively new to C programming
but if you could use these PICs to decode and format the data (perhaps a
string of data sent via serial) it seems you would save processing time
(allowing more resources to be spent on behavior logic). Is there some
pitfall to this idea that I do not see (other than increased complexity)?

The advantage of distributed processing is that you can take a sometimes considerable load off the main MCU. Consider a speed regulator: a sensor is needed to continuously monitor the speed at which the wheels are turning and adjustments in motor (...)
