Information on a mechanical solution to this problem can be found at
http://www.phred.org/~alex/lego. It uses two differentials to build a
mechanical adder/subtractor.
That said, it often isn't too big of an issue. For instance if you are
building a line follower robot it doesn't matter too much if it pulls to the
right. It will loose the line and then turn left and find it again.
