Also, in building a simple two wheel and castor bot as per the • instructions,
the robot does not travel in a straight line as the instructions say it
will. Is it possible that I have a bad motor?

maybe, but probably not.  i found the same problem.  Again, Baum's book
(somewhere) mentions that there are going to be individual differences • between
motors, such that some turn more easily than others.  So on a two motor
bot that uses each motor to control a wheel, even if both motors are • programmed
to go forward, it will drift.

Information on a mechanical solution to this problem can be found at
http://www.phred.org/~alex/lego.  It uses two differentials to build a
mechanical adder/subtractor.

That said, it often isn't too big of an issue.  For instance if you are
building a line follower robot it doesn't matter too much if it pulls to the
right.  It will loose the line and then turn left and find it again.

(...) have you tried upping the output power on the motor by 1 on the turn (...) i don't think long. The Baum book highly recommends getting rechargeables. (...) maybe, but probably not. i found the same problem. Again, Baum's book (somewhere) (...) (25 years ago, 12-Jan-00, to lugnet.robotics)
