I had the same problems and I thought about some possible solutions (not
succesfully implemented yet. I'm new on this :-).
Just to remember the problem (I hope it's still the original one): Rotate 2
axles in sync when in the same direction, and be able to turn one ofr both
to allow for rotation.
1) Use a single motor with a differential. Motors will be in sync. One of 2
of the axles should have a gear. You have 2 options to rotate:
a) Constructopedia solution : Use a beam to prevent one of the axles
from moving backward by blocking the gear. This one is easy.
b) Use a second motor to move/slide beams to block the gear. This way
you could freeze one of the axles and still move the free one in both
directions. I still didn't design a good blocking mechanism :(
2) Use a single motor conected to one of the axles. Use a second motor to
control a sliding axle (See Mario Ferrari site, S2 model) that would
connected to the other axle or not (maybe in the reverse direction?). That
works like a gearbox. This way you can both both axles together in sync or a
single one (maybe both in reverse direction).
3) Use 2 motors, each on a axle. Use gears on each gear with a "rotating
piece" that can be detected by touch sensors. Whenever one of the sensors
arrive first, stop it and wait for the second to move again. Software
solution. I used it with the Constructpedia walking mechanisms. I had some
problem with touch sensor ripple but it seens to work.
I saw a solution using magnets attached to pulleys somewhere. Sorry, I can't
remember where.
These are just suggestions. I hope it helps...

| Bryan, many of us have noticed small to larger differences in the motor characteristics. Unfortunately difficult to compensate for... If you are lucky enough to have 3 or 4 motors you can try to 'match' them. Anyone else have suggestions?? (25 years ago, 1-Jan-00, to lugnet.robotics)
