Indeed yes - NiMh are much better. The main problem with them is that
they have a high internal leakage. They are much worse than NiCads in
this respect. So much so that the electric car racers here have
abandoned them - they lose too much charge even overnight for their
extreme requirements.

Yes - they would be a better bet, and give full 1.5v rather than 1.2v
for both Nicad and NiMh.
Mind you a small sealed lead acid battery would be good ballast wouldn't
it (8-)#
