re:  rechargeables

(Speculating.)  It may be that the low-battery indicator does not work
with rechargables because of the voltage knee.  Typically with
rechargables the voltage drops precipitously once you run out of
charge.  Lego's concern may be that you'll lose your firmware and
programs too easily.  In a situation like that, it's better to
categorically warn people not to use them, than to qualify the warning
with "unless you don't give a fig if you lose your firmware and
programming".

That is the problem with NiCd rechargeables. By the time the battery
low detector kicks in, it is often too late. And they have a 'memory' so
you do want to run them down periodically. They are not recommended
for the PalmPilot for the same reason.

Now, I THOUGHT NiMH was not supposed to suffer from these
problems but I haven't verified this. Some folks claim to have had
good results with NiMH batteries in the PalmPilot.
Indeed yes - NiMh are much better.  The main problem with them is that
they have a high internal leakage.  They are much worse than NiCads in
this respect. So much so that the electric car racers here have
abandoned them - they lose too much charge even overnight for their
extreme requirements.

There are also rechargeable alkalines which give you a small number
of recharges on an otherwise normal alkaline cell.
Yes - they would be a better bet, and give full 1.5v rather than 1.2v
for both Nicad and NiMh.

Mind you a small sealed lead acid battery would be good ballast wouldn't
it (8-)#
