NiCad "memory" is a myth. Long ago, nicads were much more sensetive to
how they were charged, but their performance is a function of how they got
the charge they're on, not on previous charges. Modern cells are far
less sensetive than they were 10 years ago. Here's a hint though... pass
up "trendy" nicads in flowery packaging and get those good ol' yellow
Sanyo cells that are often sold loose.
NiCads have a much lower capacity than alkies. Their advantage is that
nicads, due to lower internal resistance, can dump out a lot faster- this
is the main reason they're used in R/C cars.
I suspect the best reason not to use nicads in the RCX is that they have
lower voltage... 6 will have 7.2 V instead of 9, which is closer to the
brick's specified range. An 8-pack ought to work fine, but you'd have to
mount it externally.

| re: rechargeables (...) That is the problem with NiCd rechargeables. By the time the battery low detector kicks in, it is often too late. And they have a 'memory' so you do want to run them down periodically. They are not recommended for the (...) (26 years ago, 1-Dec-98, to lugnet.robotics)
