The synchro drive looks amazing, and I mistakenly left a printout of Wes's
images where my 4-year-old could find it.

I kept banging my head against the wall with my attempts for a reliable
rack-and-pinion steering system 'bot, and, as I've already half-dismantled
that prototype, thought I might take a breather with a synchro-drive.

However, I don't have those big turntables (and can't really blow $30 to $40
on them). Has anyone tried a similar mechanism without depending on those? I
can _almost_ visualize it, but thought I'd hit the group up for ideas before
digging in this evening.

Wes,

You can add me to the list of impressed synchro enthusiasts! :-)
Very nice design.
Your compact design inspired me also...
So, I went off and found another suitable tire for the small wheel hubs.
It's actually two smaller o-rings and a larger one offset to one side.
(small o-rings are size 014 : 1/16" width, 1/2" ID, 5/8" OD
and the large one is size 114 : 3/32" width, 5/8" ID, 13/16" OD )
Placing the large o-ring closest to the inside edge of the wheel hub • preserves
the 1:1 ratio of wheel radius to wheel offset from center of the turntable.

A picture of this 'tire' is at :

BTW, I only use one wheel per turntable because it enables the bot to
change directions without
altering it's locatation or direction due to wheel scrub.
And keeping the wheel radius and offset equal reduces errors even more.
Of course, this is only if the bot doesn't tip over.  ;-)

I don't have an alternative, but you can buy two turntables from Pitsco for 9.75 - a real bargain in my opinion. The cost is actually 15.75 - minimum shipping is 6.00. I bulk up my orders from them to maximize the shipping cost value. -Wes (...) (25 years ago, 15-Nov-99, to lugnet.robotics)
